Mythical history
According to an old story, Lord Shiva was married to Daksha Prajapati’s daughter Sati. While Daksha Prajapati did not like Lord Shiva. On the advice of the gods, he got Sati married to Lord Shiva. One day when Daksha Prajapati was going to perform a special yagya, he invited all the gods and goddesses except Shiva, seeing which Prajapati did not invite Lord Shiva even after Sati’s repeated requests. Due to which Sati got angry and jumped into that yagya.
When Lord Shiva came to know about this, he got angry and destroyed Daksha Prajapati’s yagya. Seeing his fierce anger, the gods and goddesses got scared and started praying to calm his anger. Seeing this, Daksha Prajapati also became sad and started apologizing to Shiva. Due to which Lord Shiva appeared a little calm and after blessing him, took Sati’s burnt body from there. While carrying the corpse of Sati, various body parts started falling from it. Wherever Sati’s body parts fell, Shakti Peethas were formed there. The place where the eyes of Maa Sati fell, a temple of Naina Devi was built which is still situated in Nainital. However, there is a lake here in the shape of an eye which increases its mythological importance even more.
Importance of Pujas
